Data Engineer

***Location: This is a hybrid position for those based in Tulsa, OK or willing to relocate to Tulsa, OK.***

About the job
We are looking for a data engineer to join our growing team in Tulsa, OK. This ideal candidate is skilled in both AWS tools and data engineering—and is comfortable both leading teams and working collaboratively.

In this job, you will get to assist various clients in the following focus areas:

  • Criminal Justice Reform in Oklahoma
  • Education in Oklahoma
  • Nonprofits that serve Tulsa, OK, and Oklahoma City, OK
  • Municipalities (cities and counties) across the United States
  • Various start-ups in Upside Down Labs (like thirdline.io)
You will be responsible for:
  • Collaborating with clients to understand and prioritize their data reporting needs ?and developing user stories
  • Designing and helping administer data architecture in AWS (Azure / GCP a plus)
  • Design and lead teams to implement data pipelines
  • Exploring clients’ data environment and assessing gaps to meet requirements
  • Providing technical expertise on data storage, data mining, and data cleansing

Who we’re looking for
Somebody whose sociability, humor, and kindness complement their technical abilities; who can not only build a tool but also present their work, develop strong relationships with our nonprofit and purpose-driven clients, and connect with new ones. Social awareness and an entrepreneurial attitude towards growing our network of clients will be extremely valuable.

Somebody who likes to take things and run with them. You will not have a manager looking over your shoulder or lining tasks up on your plate—you will have accountability to fulfill and the agency to get it done however you see fit. You will work alongside self-directed teammates towards a common goal: using the power of data to make organizations awesome and help communities thrive in Tulsa. An insatiable desire to learn, the autonomy to teach yourself, and the grit to figure out difficult things is more important than your current technical expertise; so is being willing to take chances on what you believe will be the best solution to a problem, and not relying on a boss to sign off on all your decisions.

You care about the mission and you are dynamic in getting there—you pick up others’ slack when you see it, then make sure we solve the issue so you don’t have to do it again. You like to branch out and, like your colleagues, will eventually fill multiple roles that all support the team in different ways

Additionally, we are looking for candidates who have most of the technical and personal skills listed below:

Technical Skills

  • 5+ years experience as a Data Engineer
  • 5+ years of experience with SQL
  • 3+ years of experience with Python
  • 5+ years of experience with AWS
  • 5+ years of experience with APIs

Personal Skills

  • Communicating with clients and team members
  • Self-organizing, comfortable with autonomy
  • Rapid learning
  • Juggling multiple roles
  • Comfort with structure
  • Comfort with conflict (Willingness to raise and solve tensions to improve how we work)

Why work here
Our teammates enjoy many benefits, including unlimited paid time off, flexible work schedule, environment, and income, plus health and retirement, disability, life insurance and more.

We run our company as a Holacracy, which is a flat organizational structure that emphasizes distributed authority, autonomy, structural adaptability, and consent-based decision-making. At our company, you will get to fill roles and play an active part in sensing how things could be better than they are, then engaging with teammates to improve our systems, processes and roles. You will have the authority to fulfill your roles’ purposes as well as accountabilities to keep you on the same page with all your teammates. A self-organizing and autonomous person will thrive in our structure that prioritizes mutual accountability over a chain of command.
